Obama’s re-election was a terrible, terrible great thing. You know the worst of the man, as I have posted it here often. No words are needed to explain why his re-election poses a grave danger to many of this world’s people’s property and lives, as well as their civil rights.
But a word is needed as to why I think this is a good thing even while conservatives, Romney supporters, and even libertarians see it as the end of the world. This election cycle I have seen more clearly than ever the reliance by small government supporters on the mechanisms of power, men, and pragmatism to having their ends served. That hope died last night a little, much to my delight. I was very happy by the end of the night that things went as they did (and probably would have been just as happy if they went the other way, but for different reasons).
You see, this is the beginning, not the end. Our reliance on such a pitiful candidate to save us from The One was a defiance of our strongest traditional roots, of all kinds. Hope is not to be found in one man or ideology of force. Where we will find reform of this society and the world is in God, family, small community, service, voluntary actions, resisting evil (especially evils that are a result of the violence of government action), and seeking the good for those around us. Hope was not dashed last night. It was re-established. I was dismayed in the last few weeks to see many family and friends hinging all hope for the future on a man who changed his mind often in the pursuit of power. Our trust should never have been deposited fully in him to get anything done. There is no man who is a solution to all of our problems but Jesus the Christ. The world will not end with Obama’s re-election. Evil will continue, and we will resume our path toward national decay. But Romney was not the answer. There is no meaning to be found in the election of a man to a position of such power. Meaning will be found only in family, friends, and the Eternal. Many of us would do well to remember this truth, in light of their candidate’s defeat last night…
And so a new point in the cycle begins. I have many thoughts on what this cycle will look like, but I believe it will be dangerous, exciting, and a time in which the many facades will tumble. Last night was a good thing, though it brings great evil…
