There is a growing form of gay marriage I do not support. Though I have thought for a while that civil union-type gay marriage should be legal (holding true to Equal Protections, Due Process, and freedom of contract and civil rights, all held in Separation of Church & State), more and more, I am hearing threats from Democrats toward the Church. These threats essentially state that if the Church (or its various independent charities/orgs like Knights of Columbus) does not recognize gay marriage, the Church will lose its tax-exempt status. This threat has also been given in attempts to try and stave off Catholic opposition to the healthcare bill. Besides the fact that these threats are inherently unconstitutional, immoral, and discriminatory, they severely restrict the ability of the Church to do good in the U.S. If gay marriage, health care, or any other ‘rights’ movement includes such talk, I will not only not support that movement, I will be the first to condemn it and vote against it. Such intrusion by the state into the realm of religion is unacceptable, and it makes my blood boil to even hear such talk…
