If you use Tor, 5 VPNs, and 3 levels of encryption, chances are the NSA can hack through the lines of code to determine what you are doing, or the company whose software/hardware you are using has already given them a free pass. Apple did. I am convinced at this point everyone has.
I am still torn whether I believe Snowden to be a government plant or an actual freedom fighter. Nothing he has done has slowed the progress of the surveillance state, but it seems few citizens will henceforth be fazed by more news of intrusive monitoring of thy neighbor. Just a few years ago, the government arguing in court that the 4th Amendment didn’t apply to data on servers would be alarming, at least. Now it is hardly a blip…
