RANT! A fb friend snapped today, and asked why I always believe I am right and find it so important to comment on the political things he posts. This was my response:
[T]he difference between your views and mine are that you want to force people to do things at the barrel of a gun, whether it be taxation policy or positive rights/benefits for some at the expense of others. It is a very uncomfortable thing to be subject to someone you know saying in essence “if you do not abide within these policies I want, I will force you to, and if you resist that force, you will be jailed, and if you resist that jail, you will be killed.” Which is ultimately what all of your views come down to, is the imposition of force for questionable returns that may degrade not only our morality, but also our humanity. We have, in history, seen the egalitarianism you wish to impose by force, and it does end with guns. Actually it ends past guns, because you run out of bullets to kill all of the people who disagree with your enlightened view of humanity. Yes, let us well-wish our way to prosperity and human goodness by replacing morality with law. Let us make laws that destroy reason to compete and make money, which at the same time makes life better for our neighbors. Let us re-define what a family is so as not to discriminate against anyone, which simultaneously eventually makes everyone dependent on the state instead of each other. Let us level personal morality instead for the morality of the class of angels that rules us, imposed by law. Let us make laws that demand property for everyone, while failing to see that the government cannot create property, it can only destroy it or move it while destroying it. Let us force all men to be as we wish, because men cannot be trusted to be good by themselves. Men are stupid and evil beings, after all…
This self-righteousness gets old, precisely for the fact that it is not a new way of thinking. Do you want to kill all of those who disagree with your views? Because that is what it would take to impose them. You should ponder that truth carefully, because it is the nature of using government force at every turn. You have lost your creativity, [Dave]. Is the best you can do “Let the state do it!” to every question of human existence? Do you think that this is the most advanced way to live, to assume that all men are dumb or bad and need to be forced to be good to do right? Do you think no greater society exists than one by which freedom is destroyed for most men in favor of the caprice of men like yourself? That is the uncomfortable essence of where I am coming from when I post on your rants, and that is why you cannot see where I am coming from. You have already assumed your fellow man is a fool, else why would we need an all-seeing, all-dictating state? How could I be anything different to you?
Misanthropy + Control. That is what it all comes down to. Misanthropy by itself is acceptable. I do not wish to have a utopia where everyone is happy and good and smart, because such a place is not possible given human nature. But the control part is what gets me. I may believe my fellow man is a fool, but it is not my job to be his parents. The only thing I can do is ensure he does not hurt others by being a fool. I cannot control him into being a good person, but I can give him reason to be a bad one. I cannot make him smart, but I can encourage him to make poor decisions. Where did we stumble along the way of human existence that we began to believe that one man knows what is better for another, and, more than that, that the man should have the right to tell another what he may and may not do (other than the most basic of laws like those against murder or theft)? How do we know that men even can effectively do so? Are men not good for their own sake or for God’s, not for the sake of laws and the edicts of puffed-up men?
Is morality increasing or decreasing in the shadow of the largest government ever to exist? We have 5 to 6 times the government of the 1960s – do we seem that much better off? When will we have seen enough government and force? Can external force create good people, or do society-wide incentives push men toward being the worst of themselves?
Imagine for a moment that we encountered an advanced alien race. What is the most advanced societal arrangement that you would think that this group would have? One in which the government has a camera in every room and laws for every action? I don’t believe so. I think the best arrangement we can think of is one where war, violence, and force are unheard of, where respect is given because of an inherent humanity of the person, and most of all, where personal responsibility is put above all other things. We are not approximating that free society on earth. We are not approaching any semblance of utopia, though most statists seem to think that nothing but the complete control over every human being will barely be enough. We have tried democratic socialism for almost 100 years now, and democratic or republican governance for centuries before that. When does it end? When will people start to realize that the answer is not always “the government” and that type of thinking is not novel or persuasive to thinking people any more?
And now it comes to the reality of today… What happens when the entire system begins to encourage the disintegration of virtue and the building of vice to survive? What happens when the system pushes men to take advantage of each other to survive? What happens when the purpose of the government itself is subverted to being a machine by which people exploit each other? What happens now?
