Determinism is a self-defeating philosophy, because if a person does not choose beliefs and is programmed to believe a certain thing, he or she is incapable of truly believing anything. In truth, the value of the belief is chosen for already.
Even so, some people still support the idea – notably famous psychologists. Unfortunately, they are wrong, even in spite of recent findings in brain science. A four-part explanation of free will’s biological basis can be found here.
We can’t end there, though. If free will does not exist, the justice system can’t really assign blame to those who commit crimes.
