You don’t need a conspiracy theory any longer.
Yesterday, Congress voted to preserve the text of a bill that would allow for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens without trial by the military, provide that military courts can be used for any and all trials of “terrorist” activities, and undermine the principle of Habeus Corpus in a manner that has not been seen since Roosevelt (or even Lincoln) was president. Why does this matter to you, you might ask? I hear this one a lot: “I’ve done nothing wrong, so I have nothing to worry about.” False. The erosion of the civil liberties of anyone, including terrorists and the worst sorts of criminals is always dangerous for you, because the erosion is on the same ground which you stand. Terrorism is not a country, it is a tactic, yet the definition has been tortured until it screams “War powers apply to me!” Meanwhile, acts of criminal men are increasingly delegated to the military as police. When the military become the police, we will have arrived at Mussolini’s Italy. Be vigilant of the definition of terrorist, as it has meant many things in the recent past:
- In Modern America, Questioning War Is Considered Terrorism
- Fusion Center documents label OKC Bombing investigators as terrorist
- Dad Labeled a Terrorist for Taking Photos of Own Kid in a Mall
- GOP, Tea Party Labeled as ‘Terrorists’
- Liberty Dollar Minter Convicted for ‘Domestic terrorism’
- Congressman wants WikiLeaks listed as terrorist group
- Labeled “Terrorist,” Iranian-American Businessman Wins Lawsuit for Defamation
- Teenager labeled terrorist by use of Patriot Act and stripped of due process
- Secret State Police Report: Ron Paul, Bob Barr, Chuck Baldwin, Libertarians are Terrorists
- 10 Easy Ways to Be Labeled a “Terrorist” by the Government
- FBI Flyer Labels Defenders of Constitution Terrorists
To this list (seen in a comment of EPJ, h/t to the anonymous commenter!), I would merely add the observation that the legal definition of terrorism has to be completely ignored in the shadow of our own government’s doing, as the government engages in terrorism very commonly, both at home and abroad. As it turns out, it was not the Federalists that were correct about the Bill of Rights; It was the Anti-Federalists. Everything we have not been given in the Bill of Rights has been taken, along with some of what is.
Obama’s Justice Department has said he will veto the bill if the language is not watered down – but only because he wishes to have all the power to himself. Amazing that we have to rely on Obama, destroyer of rights, to preserve our civil liberties. Nothing shows more clearly how far down a bad path we have come.
The U.S. (unlike the E.U., which is overrun by a different form of statists) has shown that it will disregard the safety of its citizens in order to “protect” us and take more of our rights. Are you so certain that with all of these military contractors in its pocket, there is no reason the government’s resources will be used against you? Perhaps instead you need a reminder of Bush’s Operation TIPS, which was a plan to make 1 of every 24 Americans a narc for the state. What in the hell is wrong with us? Incompetence of government officials is the most dangerous precipice where we stand. Judge Napolitano examines more of what this bill means for you and me, which should be far more than “If you don’t do anything wrong, you are safe!”:
I am reminded, finally, of a saying:
First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
Will you speak out?
